Privacy Policy for Reverly

The short version

Reverly keeps your family's stories on your own iPad.

We don't have accounts, so we don't know who you are. We don't use analytics, advertising, or any outside services. Reverly has no server of its own, and we never receive your photos, your recordings, or anything you say in them.

Your photos stay in your Photos library, exactly where they already are. Reverly only adds the voices — and those stay on your iPad and, if you're signed into iCloud, in your own private iCloud account, which only you can open.

What Reverly keeps, and where it lives

Your photos and videos stay in Photos. Reverly never copies them, never changes them, and never moves them. It remembers which photo a story belongs to, and nothing more.

Your recordings live on your iPad. When you record someone telling a story, that audio file is saved in Reverly's own storage on the device.

Transcripts live there too. Every recording is turned into text so you can search for it later. That happens on your iPad itself — the audio is never sent anywhere to be transcribed.

Scanned prints are the exception worth knowing about. When you photograph a paper print, or bring in a picture from Files or Google Drive, Reverly keeps that image itself, because there's no original sitting in your Photos library to point at. It's the one kind of picture Reverly holds.

The names you type — storytellers, people in photos, albums, stories — are kept alongside all of this.

What leaves your iPad

Three things, and nothing else.

1. Your own iCloud, if you're signed in. Your recordings, transcripts, scanned prints, and how you've organised everything are copied to your private iCloud account, so they survive a lost iPad and appear on your other ones. This uses Apple's CloudKit private database: it belongs to your Apple Account, and we cannot read it. We have no way to see what's in there. Your photos and videos aren't part of this — they're already yours, in Photos. If you'd rather none of this happened, don't sign into iCloud; Reverly works completely normally without it.

2. Place names. Many photos record where they were taken. When one does, Reverly sends those coordinates to Apple's map service to turn them into a readable name like "Reykjavík, Iceland", and keeps only that text. This is a request to Apple over the internet, not something that happens on the device. Apple receives the coordinates; we don't. It's the same lookup the Photos app performs, and it's the one thing Reverly sends out on its own. Note that Reverly never asks for permission to know where you are, and never checks your location — this only ever uses information already stored inside your photos.

3. Whatever you deliberately share. When you export a story, back everything up to a folder, or share a recording as a video, you're creating ordinary files and choosing where they go. Once you've sent or saved them, they're yours to look after — Reverly isn't involved any further.

One more thing, for completeness: the first time Reverly transcribes a recording, iPadOS may download speech-recognition files from Apple onto your device. That's a download to your iPad. Your audio never goes the other way.

What we collect

Nothing.

We say that plainly because it's unusual and because we mean it precisely:

• No accounts. There's nothing to sign up for and no password to forget.
• No analytics or tracking. Reverly doesn't measure what you tap, how long you use it, or whether you use it at all.
• No advertising, and nothing about you is ever sold or shared with data brokers. There is nothing to sell.
• No outside companies. Reverly is built entirely from Apple's own frameworks. There are no third-party components in it of any kind.
• No server of ours. Reverly cannot contact us, because there's nothing to contact.

What Reverly asks permission for

Four things, and it will always be obvious why:

• Your photo library — so you can see your pictures and give them a voice. You can grant access to only some photos if you prefer; Reverly works with whatever you allow.
• Your microphone — to record narration. That's the whole point of the app.
• Your camera — only to photograph physical prints.
• Speech recognition — to turn recordings into text, on the device.

Say no to any of them and Reverly keeps working, with that one ability missing.

Recordings of other people

Reverly exists to record other people — usually parents and grandparents, often people who will never read this page. That deserves saying out loud.

Those recordings live on the iPad they were made on, under the control of whoever is using it. We can't see them, retrieve them, or delete them for anyone.

When you add a storyteller, Reverly asks once — kindly, and you can skip it — what that person would like their family to be able to do with their recordings one day. Whatever they choose is kept with their name.

Reverly will never generate or imitate anyone's voice. Not now, and not in a future version. That isn't a feature we haven't built yet; it's a line we won't cross.

And a request rather than a policy: ask people before you record them. Reverly is built assuming you will.

Children

Children appear in family photos and family stories, and they're welcome in Reverly.

Reverly collects no personal information from anyone, of any age. There are no accounts, no messaging, no social features, no advertising, and nothing that leaves a child's information anywhere we could see it. Anything involving a child stays on the family's own iPad and in the family's own iCloud, under the control of the adult using it.

Deleting things

• Delete a recording and the audio file and its transcript are removed from your iPad, and from your iCloud copy.
• Delete the app and everything Reverly stored on that iPad goes with it. Anything already copied to your iCloud stays there until you remove it — in iOS Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage.
• We have nothing to delete. If you ask us to erase your data, the honest answer is that we never had any. There's no account to close and no records on our side, because there is no "our side".

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to see, correct, export, or delete the personal information a company holds about you — for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA in California.

Reverly holds none, so in practice there's nothing for us to hand over or erase. That isn't a way of avoiding the question: everything Reverly knows is already on your iPad, where you can read, change, export, or delete it yourself at any time. Reverly's export and backup features exist precisely so your information is yours to take away in plain, open files.

For anything stored in your iCloud account, Apple is the one holding it, and Apple's privacy policy and account tools apply.

Changes to this policy

If Reverly ever changes what it does with your information, this page changes first, and the date at the top changes with it. We'd only be updating this page because the app genuinely started doing something different — and given everything above, that would be a significant change we'd want you to notice.
